In society today, dance is more popular than ever. The Dance Program at Warwick SHS provides a unique way for students to experience an intrinsic sense of enjoyment and personal achievement through expressing and challenging themselves physically. As an art form, dance encourages artistic creativity. The Dance teachers at Warwick SHS, foster the student’s passion, imagination and expression through a range of physically active and engaging lessons.
The Dance Program is designed to build on the fundamental skills of movement. Students gain an understanding of the physical competencies specific to dance including strength, flexibility, co-ordination and musicality, while using their body as a medium for artistic expression. They gain experience in different styles and forms of dance and are given opportunities to perform to a variety of audiences.
Students are taught set routines but are also encouraged to create and present other dances relevant to their lives. Appropriate popular music is used to maintain motivation. They are taught to use a wide range of creative processes such as improvisation and ways to manipulate the choreographic elements when creating their own dance works both in large and small groups.
In the Year 8, 9 and 10 program, Dance is organised into three broad areas
In Years 11 and 12, study is based on the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) requirements, with Stage 1 offered in Year 11 and Stage 2 offered in Year 12.
