GOOD STANDING: THE CONCEPT OF GOOD STANDING

This policy aims to recognise and assist school students to take responsibility for their actions and to encourage each to improve his or her general performance.

The outcome sought is for each student to maintain a consistent focus on their intended educational outcomes by responsibly carrying through all the requirements to achieve success. It is intended that all students will at all times maintain Good Standing and receive a Certificate of Good Standing for their portfolios.

Every student will begin the school year with Good Standing. This entitles the students to the rights and privileges of the school.

The Loss of Good Standing

Students may lose their Good Standing through unsatisfactory performance in academic progress, behaviour, dress, attendance or lateness.

The status of Good Standing will be withdrawn (and returned) by the Associate Principal or Lower School Student Services Manager, in conjunction with the Year Coordinators and HOLAs. Good Standing will be lost for a period of five school weeks for Year 8 to 10 students and ten school weeks for Year 11 to 12 students.

The Consequences of the Loss of Good Standing

Students in this position will

  1. have their name added to the whole school Loss of Good Standing list
  2. will be refused permission to attend non curricular school functions (e.g. the School Ball, reward camps), reward excursions or representing the school (special events, performances or sporting teams), until the status of Good Standing is returned.

The loss of Good Standing does not preclude a student attending curriculum related excursions.

The Notification of the Loss of Good Standing

A list showing the names of students who have lost Good Standing will be circulated to staff and will be updated regularly. Staff will consult the list to determine which students may not attend an extra curricular school function.

Parents/Carers will be notified of a Loss of Good Standing by letter.

The Reinstatement of Good Standing

To reinstate Good Standing a student will need to liaise with the Year Coordinator to demonstrate that he/she has complied with the requirements of Good standing during the ‘loss’ period.

The student will be required to complete a reflection sheet and when Good standing is granted parents/carers will receive a letter notifying them that Good standing has been returned.

Recognition of Good Standing

Students with Good Standing will receive a Certificate for their portfolios at the end of each semester.

If Good Standing is lost in a particular semester the student will not receive a certificate for that semester.
